The Power of PR

buttstation-2.jpg

We understand that it's important to see a return on the investment of a campaign and prospective clients often ask us about how a PR campaign's effectiveness can be measured. We're always working with our clients to help them connect the dots - correlating media placements to web traffic and, ultimately, sales.

Today, we proved the power of PR to ourselves. Our friend Wayne with Gear Diary, who recently posted about Tanita's KD-400, brought another cool product to our attention today. When my colleague Katie at BLASToutdoors in San Francisco passed on a recent post of Wayne's about a "unique" desk organizer, I knew it would be the perfect complement to her San Fran desk. As soon as I completed my order to have one shipped to her, Katie let me know that she just ordered two! Ah, the power of PR! Who says you can't link media coverage to sales?

If you'd like one of these desk organizers for yourself, head on over to Stupid.com.

Camping...it's In-Tents

BLASTmedia and BLAST Outdoors' clients run the gamut when it comes to the latest and greatest tech products. It seems like every time I turn around, we're bringing on a new and exciting client. One of the best perks of working at Blast is getting to try out the cool stuff around the office! So when word spread that I would be leaving this week to be a camp counselor down in Bedford, IN, the girls in the San Fran office hooked me up with some great camping gear! Now I'm ready to head to camp with my Coghlan's Headlight, Cliplight and Micro Lantern and SmartShield eco-friendly combo sunscreen and insect repellent. Check me out with all my cool gear in the great outdoors!

A Day in the Life...

blastlogo.gif

For those of you looking for a job, or wandering what we do here or simply stalking me, I decided it would be fun to give everyone a glimpse into a typical day at BLASToutdoors (and for our midwestern readers, a little taste of San Francisco).

One of the first emails I opened was from the Fox & Friends morning show requesting every product highlighted in a "Camping Essentials" pitch I sent out. My hook was "gear that won't break your back- or the bank" and boy did those news stations eat it up! Aside from Fox & Friends, I got product and information requests from six other stations interested in putting together a camping feature. Not bad for a mornings work!

We are currently hiring another account representative and it's always nice to get the surge of resumes and cover letters that never fail to follow our Craigslist postings. Sometimes it's funny too. Yesterday was no exception, in fact we got two exceptionally funny coverletters. I'm not sure if statements about making yourself stand out are urgently drilled into college kids' heads at PRSA or during meetings with advisors, or if kids in San Francisco are just uber creative (read: too creative), but we received two cover letters worth noting. One began by stating how lazy he was and went on to mention his meth addiction (?). Yup, got our attention and we laughed all the way to the trashcan. My personal favorite was a letter from a man relating all his travel experiences including his search for Nessie in Ireland. I'm all for bringing him in but sadly, Mendy isn't.

As Jess was busy splashing SkullCandy news all over Transworld Business and Surf, the rest of us got wind of a David Beckham appearance in Union Square- to meet him all we had to do was buy $200 worth of underwear from Macy's! Not sure why, but in the end we were too late to squander our money and had to settle for battling the crowd with the rest of his screaming fans.

Where's David?

Sarah is crazy about an asian-fusion restaurant in the Marina called Betelnut, and after a long, productive day of securing media coverage, Jess, Sarah, Mendy and I rallied for dinner and drinks. It's worth mentioning that Betelnut was awesome! It's small plates so the four of us ordered about eight or nine entrees including scallops resting on coconut rice patties, lettuce wraps (they blew P.F. Chang's out of the water), Malayasian curry, spicy prawns...I'll definitely be going back!

Next we headed to The Bus Stop for a little pool playin'. The Bus Stop, a great little dive bar on Union Street set the scene for a random night. As I was picking out my favorite Heart song on the jukebox (why is it that some songs we only play on jukeboxes?), I noticed my new Ohio State friends that I met Saturday night with Mendy after the North Beach festival. These ladies are crazy and have a knack for playing the worst music on said jukebox- that I recall from Sat.

We even met a tech editor at CIO; a dead giveaway in a blue button down shirt. Anyone else read Valleywag? He was nice enough to give us the scoop on the worst SF tech PR firms! He is looking forward to hearing from our tech PR counterpart, BLASTmedia thus ending his string of bad encounters. What are new friends for?

That's us in a nutshell, meeting people where ever we go, mixing business with pleasure and generally enjoying each other's company. The only thing that could have made Wednesday even better was if I got to touch David Beckham...

Russian Review: The Fargo King

fargo king.jpg

No surprise that Michael likes him some of our newest client, Nobis. Pictured above, our Russian Reviewer is stylin this head warming beauty reminiscent of Eastern Europe. Sport that he is, Michael agreed to model The Fargo King design flaps down, however he insists that men prefer flabs up and secured in the back. Well luckily that is also an option.

Nobis has one of the most eclectic lines of hats and accessories that I have seen, and although Michael and I have vastly different tastes in fashion, I like that The Fargo King seems to be inspired by one of my favorite movies- dontchya know?

Independence Day Comes Early for a BLASToutdoors Client

It is definitely not the 4th of July yet, but Independence Day came early this year for one BLASToutdoors client, as Dragon declared their independence from Oakley today. A big day in the action sports industry, the break off will allow Dragon to go back to being a private company.

Congratulations to Dragon-- this is a huge day and we're stoked to be a part of it!

Check out more of the details on the break as released exclusively by our friends at Transworld Business.

Inside BLAST with Sarah Andrus!

tradeshows&friends 071.jpg

We carved out part of this morning's meeting for a little Q&A with our delightful PR Manager, Sarah Andrus. Here is what she dished out-

Katie: Let's start out with some random facts- what wouldn't we know about you?
Sarah: Let's see...I'm definitely a foodie obsessed with JT (yes, Justin Timberlake); I'm an Angels fan and fitness buff; I've been known to snort when I laugh and (this is really random), I was the first girl born in my family in 65 years!!!

Jessica: Katie, Mendy and I all worked at Subway for our first job. What was your first place of employment?
Sarah: I grew up about a block away from the beach and my first job was at our town's pharmacy.

Katie: What is your most memorial vacation?
Sarah: I loved Florence, Italy and actually got engaged on that trip in front of the Trevi in Rome!

Jessica: Where is your favorite place to go out in San Francisco?
Sarah: I love eating at Betelnut on Union Street. I could go there every day, easy.

Katie: You trained for a marathon, right?
Sarah: Yup, I ran a marathon to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Got other crucial questions for this BLAST lady? Feel free to email her!

When Your Job Pays Off

As many folks in our industry will say-- There's one point at which you'll realize your work is paying off. For me, the work I do day in and day out for my clients truly paid off last night at the Cool Kids concert.

Hanging out with my buddy from Imeem (only the best music site out there), I had the opportunity to kick it in the VIP section at the concert AND see my client's product, Skulllcandy, hard at work, as both the Cool Kids and Pacific Division's DJ's rocked out with the Skullcandy SK Pros!

SK_red.JPG

While I may not be the person directly responsible for the use of these headphones in two hip-hop boy bands, I can definitely go to sleep at night knowing PR has helped the product outreach level for my client. I mean if the Cool-Kids are wearing them, they must be cool....

San Francisco Full of Model Citizens

sf workout.jpg

As if living in San Francisco isn't great enough, USA Today just published an article declaring us to be "the fittest big city" in the U.S. Quite a change from my hometown of Cincinnati ( and according to annual surveys by Self Magazine, the whole state of Ohio).

With the high price of gas and the only city where people wouldn't question the legitimacy of the cliché "to get there I had to walk uphill both ways" sprinkled with a little west coast mentality in addition to the near extinction of chain restaurants and I can't say I'm surprised by the results. The American Fitness Index had these following criteria-

"To rank big metropolitan areas, health and fitness experts analyzed government data from the 15 most populous cities in the country and Indianapolis, where the sports-medicine group is headquartered. They took into consideration a number of health indicators, including the percentage of people who exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, eat the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables, have access to health care, have health insurance and don't smoke. They also looked at the environment, including the availability of parks, walking/bike trails and public transportation."

Looks like we get to add "model citizen" to our list of bragging rights and that more than makes up for no Super Target.
