Wild California

I remember going to the Omnimax while I was home from college for the holidays a few years ago. It was over winter break in Cincinnati, Ohio and I decided it might be fun to check out Wild California- an accolade to the vast opportunities for adventure (mountain climbing and beach bumming in the same day?!) and a documentary of sheer scenic beauty that is the California outback.

Having never been to California before, (unless my family driving a mile over the state line from Oregon counts) my knowledge was limited to mansions in Malibu and surfer dude culture.

Now I live in San Francisco and if anything Wild California was an understatement. San Francisco, in my opinion is one of the greatest cities in the country. As long as I live here I will never have to eat or shop at a chain again. But despite the eclectic neighborhoods, the architecture of the old Victorian style houses and even the sea lions at Pier 39, I love getting out.

There are the Redwoods up north, Tahoe to the south, wine country to the north and south. Since moving here in July 07, I can’t wait to leave the city at every opportunity. And there’s been many an opportunity. There was Labor Day weekend spent camping on a beach in Santa Cruz, Thanksgiving was celebrated in Sonoma biking through vineyards between tasting rooms, sailing in Sausalito, hiking through the redwoods of Six Rivers, Muir Valley day trips…the list continues.

It’s weird to think back to the cold, blustery day in Cincinnati, watching Wild California with the slight detachment inevitable in movie theatres and knowing that now, it’s all merely a golden gate bridge away. Bring on 2008!
