Happy #RoyalWedding Day, everyone! It’s time again for another BLASTmedia profile, and this time we’re highlighting our fun(ny), fearless, and fashionable Social Media “Queen,” Julie Perry.
After making a name for herself in the boating and marine industry, Internet marketing world, and YouTube marketers niche, Julie came to BLASTmedia in January 2010 to develop our social media team. Under Julie’s leadership, our team grew quickly, and she now leads seven minions who churn out serious results for our clients!
For your Friday morning entertainment, here’s a glimpse of Julie Perry. (You really have to meet her to get the full effect…and if you do, don’t forget to curtsy!)
Nickname: Jewels or JP (Although my girlfriends from high school call me “Party Pants.” What can I say: I wore a pair of red jeans to a party our sophomore year, and they’ve never let me live it down.)
Hometown & Places You’ve Lived/Worked: How much time do you have? I’ve been a vagabond for most of my adult life: Indianapolis, Indiana (hometown); Bloomington, Indiana; Washington, D.C.; Denver, Colorado; Atlanta, Georgia; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; London England; Edinburgh Scotland; Golfe-Juan France; Palma de Mallorca (Spain); Viareggio, Italy (my favorite of them all).
Outside of these land-based destinations, I spent nearly three years (1999-2001) as a stewardess aboard luxury megayachts, which took me to over 40 different ports in 18 countries. So while our crew lived ashore in condos for long durations in Italy, France and Spain (mentioned above), the rest of the time, my home was simply “on the water” (and yeah, I still get homesick for it).

Coolest Celebrity You’ve Ever Met: Sir Richard Branson was one of our charter guests when I was a yacht stewardess. I made and served his cappuccinos each morning, showed him how to call out on his cabin phone and chitchatted with him on a couple occasions. He was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth guests we ever had onboard.
Favorite Social Media Site/App/Tool: YouTube — hands down the best social media platform/tool for targeted traffic generation (more specifically, traffic that is most likely to convert to leads or sales), search engine optimization and social networking.

Favorite Source(s) for Social Media News or Tips: My Google Reader, which is my morning paper. It allows me to simply scan the headlines of ALL my favorite blogs in the morning and decide what looks interesting. I often don’t even pay attention to where a particular post is hosted unless the headline grabs me enough to read it in full and/or click over.
The blogs I end up reading the most are The Art of Non-Conformity by Chris Guillebeau (http://chrisguillebeau.com/), Michel Fortin’s blog on Copywriting, Marketing and Life (http://www.michelfortin.com/), ReelSEO – The Online Video Marketing Guide (http://www.reelseo.com/) and Venture Beat for my tech news (http://venturebeat.com/). I also still keep a foot “out at sea” by reading Diane Byrne’s MegaYacht News blog (http://megayachtnews.com/).

Favorite Book: A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf and Plato’s Republic have had the most profound impact on my life so far. Though if I can be biasedly honest, I’m also pretty proud of my own book: a part how-to, part memoir called The Insiders’ Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess: Confessions from My Years Afloat with the Rich and Famous (Morgan James Publishing, NY, NY, Oct 2006). I’m even prouder of the number of young women (and men) whose lives have been affected by it. I get several emails each month from people who’ve acted on the advice in my book over the last five years and are now either about to embark on — or are already immersed in — a fascinating career traveling the world and having life-changing experiences working in the megayacht and/or marine industry. Favorite Droid App: I’m still in love with my Google Nexus One phone (droid), but as far as apps go, the Flipbook App on my iPad 2 is a godsend. Talk about a great way to read my morning Google Reader “paper”!
What’s your favorite “thing” about BLASTmedia?
Where do I start? Not only do I love what I do, but my co-workers and clients make my world go ’round. I look forward to going to work every single day. It’s challenging, yes, but we work hard while keeping fun at the forefront. I seriously work with some of the funniest and most dedicated individuals I’ve ever met. And when it comes to having super cool clients whose products and services I feel great about promoting, we hit the jackpot.
Actually, I have an email saved and starred in my inbox from one of my fellow BLAST execs, Sabrina “Breezy” Cook (the head of our B2B PR department), and to quote her: It’s easy to work really hard for a company that you believe in. And, it’s easy to believe in a company when you love the people you work with and for. That about sums it up.
