When you are deeply involved in a process, like the media cycle, its easy to forget that others might not understand it as clearly. At BLASTmedia, we are working DAILY to secure coverage for our clients and this process can be a mystery to consumers, readers, clients and potential clients. I wanted to take a minute to travel the road to coverage.
A key factor is the difference between a news announcement and a product review – there is, most importantly, a difference when it comes to timing. With major announcements of brand new (never before introduced) products, many news sources like daily newspapers and specifically online outlets (Web sites of major newspapers, news services, blogs, etc) will be interested in writing about this news immediately – often the same day for online. Coverage happens with a very quick turn-around: we email or call a member of the media, we have a conversation about the announcement providing information and images, and they find a fit for the news piece. Coverage secured. This is a simplified version, as we often generate opportunities for interviews, larger news pieces and the ever-popular comprehensive product review.
With product reviews, there is a more involved process and time element. We strive for editors to try out the many innovative, fun and new products here at BLAST. This is step one. Step two can take a variety of paths and this is where the behind the scenes work happens. National magazines work three to six months in advance and newspapers can work up to four weeks in advance on certain pieces. This is where we go to bat for our clients. Our job is to communicate the features, highlights and messaging of our clients, while also being diligent and delicate in our follow up.
Public Relations can generate immediate coverage of news announcements, product highlights and even the occasional review in as soon as one day or one week. Here at BLAST, we have a snowball approach, as we are making outreach to secure immediate coverage; we are working to secure coverage six to eight months ahead. We’re growing PR campaigns for our clients daily, whether it’s immediate coverage on a major Web site or securing coverage for an issue hitting stands four months from now, we are constantly driving different paths on the road to coverage.
