Happy Earth Day everyone! Today marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970, and reminds us to do our part to keep our planet around for many more years to come.
While Earth Day may have been slow to gain momentum in the beginning, you couldn’t avoid it now if you tried. It’s the featured story on MSN, ABC News, MSNBC, CNN and even popular blogs like Gizmodo.
The stories include anecdotal Earth Day celebrations, thoughts on the government’s current environmental policies and, of course, tips on being green. While most of the green tips require some extra time and effort, we at BLASTmedia try to do our part. Here are some of the things we do, or tips we like:
1. Pack your lunch in reusable bags and containers. If you want to go one step further, keep a set of silver ware at your desk to clean and reuse, rather than using plastic forks and knives.
2. Reuse, THEN recycle your paper. Next time you print the wrong page or are finished with the presentation handout, use the blank sides for your notepad. Recycle the entire thing once you’re finished and you’ve saved twice the paper!
3. Recycle your old cell phones. Recently upgrade to a new phone? According to AT&T, if everyone recycled one cell phone, we could save enough energy to power more than 18,500 U.S. homes for an entire year!
4. Visit the library instead of buying new books. Not only is supporting your local library good for the community, its reusing books.
5. In addition to bringing your own bags to the grocery, try to buy items that are in season and also buy locally produced foods whenever possible. Sites like Food Routes and Eat Local Challenge can help you get started.
BLASTmedia also has a couple of great clients that can help you on your path to greenness. If you’re looking for environmentally-friendly home products, Tanita, for example, offers the HS-302 solar scale. This environmentally-conscious scale has built-in solar cells that draw power from sunlight or ordinary household light, eliminating the need to buy or recharge batteries, saving our landfills from additional battery contamination.
Another great way to green your home is with EcoSmart Fire – a beautiful collection of freestanding and built-in fireplaces. EcoSmart Fire products are fueled by Denatured Ethanol, an environmentally friendly, renewable energy. EcoSmart Fires burn clean, are 90 percent efficient and do not require any utility connection or installation. The purchase of any EcoSmart Fire now qualifies for Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency, with customers receiving up to 30% or $1,500 in Tax Credits for the purchase of any product in the line!
There’s also Nextworth, which can help you out with number three above. This site buys your old electronic items for cash, filling your pockets and keeping e-waste out of landfills!
